Goalkeeper for the Sassuolo football club and the Italian National Football Team
Vision problem: Antimetropia
Surgery: Bilateral LASIK surgery and PSP Programme
Dr. Angelo Appiotti performed bilateral LASIK surgery with the aid of the PSP (Personal Sportsman Profile) programme, that he devised for all professional athletes to achieve visual acuity from 10/10 to 20/10, and, most importantly, make one’s vision more stable, accurate and faster at every change in distance and light.
He performed a complex antimetropia surgery. As a matter of fact, the athlete’s eyes had unequal refractive power: the right eye had 2.5 dioptres of mixed astigmatism, the left eye had amblyopia (lazy eye), 3 dioptres of myopia and 3 dioptres of astigmatism. The appalling fact was that the athlete was not correcting such visual impairments by wearing contact lenses during the football matches, but only by forcing and accommodating the right eye without ever having depth and stereopsis.
Such vision problems affected all aspects that are relevant to a football goalkeeper, for instance postural balance, depth perception, eye-hand coordination as well as the absolute lack of binocularity.
The final result was 14/10 natural visual acuity.
