Visual defects today can be corrected through refractive surgery.
Sight is by far the most dominant of our senses. Our actions are, for the most part, based on what we see. The areas of our brain responsible for vision outnumber those controlling the other senses. Seen through our eyes, life looks just like a movie. Vision problems come and spoil it all.

Normal Vision and Vision Problems
The path an image follows when traveling through our body is elaborate and fascinating. It enters our eyes, turns upside down, breaks up into hundreds of pieces and reaches our brain. Here it is put together again and turned into a right-side-up image.
Our eye works like a camera. Its various parts – cornea, pupil, lens and retina – combine to adjust and send images to the optic nerve, which in turn, like an electric cable, transmits those images to our brain. This is how we can see.
A normal healthy eye, i.e. an eye that has both clear distance vision and sharp near vision, is also known as emmetropic. Normal vision is compromised when the length of the eyeball changes. The result is that light is refracted incorrectly, thereby causing vision problems, such as:
- Myopia (nearsightedness): blurred distance vision and clear near vision
- Hyperopia (far-sightedness): at a young age, blurred near vision and clear distance vision; after 40-45 years of age, both near and distance vision are blurred
- Astigmatism: blurred or distorted vision at all distances
- Presbyopia (reading vision): inability to focus on close-up objects
